Each year, we come together as a nation to honor the history, culture, and achievements of African Americans. It is a time for reflection on a journey marked by resilience—a people who laid the very foundations of our republic while being denied its abundance. We remember the ongoing struggle for freedom and equality, celebrate the progress made, and acknowledge the challenges still ahead. African American excellence is evident in literature, art, politics, social justice, science, and more. YouInc Wealth Education Services celebrates the powerful strides being made in economic freedom within the African American community.

The rise of Black-owned businesses over the past two decades is a testament to this progress. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, there were an estimated 194,585 Black or African American-owned businesses in 2024, generating $211.8 billion in annual receipts, employing 1.6 million people, and providing about $61.2 billion in annual payroll. This current data highlights continued growth and reflects a community taking control of its economic future. This entrepreneurial surge reflects a community taking control of its economic future. Since then, a vibrant spirit of entrepreneurship, deeply rooted in community, has continued to grow. Black-owned businesses, particularly the top 100 as ranked by Black Enterprise, have consistently outpaced industry growth rates, proving that diversity fosters innovation, fresh perspectives, and expanded market opportunities.

My mentor and good friend, Walter Simpkins told me, “African Americans have never fought for gold, oil, or land, but always for freedom and equality.” In the 1800s, defiance meant learning to read and write. In the 1900s, it meant civil disobedience. Today, defiance means stepping boldly into entrepreneurship—creating businesses that serve and uplift our communities. It's the young entrepreneur starting a landscaping business with a secondhand mower, growing it into a million-dollar enterprise that not only funds new ventures but also provides jobs and purpose to the next generation. Defiance is about empowering ourselves with knowledge and passing it on to our children and grandchildren.

At YouInc Wealth Education Services, we applaud African American business owners who continue to push boundaries, foster economic freedom, and inspire future generations. Your perseverance, innovation, and community spirit light the path forward. We celebrate you today and every day.
